University of Miami Nursing school to host training programme

Minister Cummings and Officials from the Ministry of  Public Health with Team from the Univeristy of Miami, School of Nursing &  Health StudiesGeorgetown:  As part of an ongoing training and development exercise between the Ministry of Public Health and the University of Miami, School of Nursing and Health Studies, a two-member team from the University is currently in Guyana to conduct a series of workshops with Nursing Tutors over the next few days. This is part of a programme funded by PAHO/WHO, which is primarily designed to build capacity among tutors of Nursing in Guyana.

 Currently, there are 25 Nursing Tutors taking part in this training programme for the Certificate in Basic Nursing Education. The 25 Nursing Tutors were chosen from the Georgetown School of Nursing, Charles Rosa School of Nursing (Linden), New Amsterdam School of Nursing along with St Joseph Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. The programme design allows for distance learning with a number of face-to-face components included.

 The visit here by Associate Professor of Clinical, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Nursing Programmes, Ms. Mary McKay and Assistant Professor of Clinical Ms. Deborah Salani from the University of Miami, School of Nursing and Health Studies is part of the face-to-face component of the training programme mentioned earlier.

 Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings met the Professors and thanked them for sharing their knowledge, skills, and experience with our local Nursing Tutors. She also stated how pleased she is that Guyana can benefit from such reputable international skills-training and experience that are being provided by the University of Miami, School of Nursing and Health Studies. Minister Cummings observed that with this level of training taking place for Guyanese Nursing Tutors, the result must be an enhancement in the delivery of Nursing Education in Guyana. 

 Principal of the Georgetown School of Nursing, Ms. Cleopatra Barkoye along with the Honorable Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings, Director of Health Sciences Education, Mr. Wilton Benn and Chief Nursing Officer, Ms. Tarmattie Barker, took the Professors on a tour of the Georgetown School of Nursing. The team met and interacted with students and tutors.
