UG Turkeyen campus Open/Career Day billed for February 17

Georgetown: The annual Open/Career Day of the Turkeyen Campus will be held on February 17, 2017 under the theme “Dare to Dream, Make it Happen!”

A special opening ceremony is planned for 9:30 h in the George Walcott Lecture Theatre. Additionally, the Guyana Launch of the CLR James Journal Special Issue on the Life and Work of Distinguished Professor CY Thomas will be held at 11:00 h on the same day in the Education Lecture Theatre, Turkeyen Campus.

And the annual Talent Splash, featuring performances in song, dance and spoken word by present and past students will be held at 15:30 h in the George Walcott Lecture Theatre. Open/Career Day seeks to inform prospective students about campus life and study options available at the University and prerequisites for same, and also to expose current university students to job opportunities and careers within their field of study.

According to Public Relations Officer Paulette Paul, “Selecting the right programme is one of the most important decisions an individual would have to make when considering choices for university study and the open/career day would provide an excellent opportunity for students, teachers and other visitors to get first-hand information about the university.” She further stated that “the day provides a rare and excellent opportunity to visit the academic departments and speak to staff members and students who know all about the available programmes and what it is like to study at UG.” It is expected that the Faculties of Agriculture & Forestry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Education & Humanities, Health Sciences, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Technology, the Berbice campus and the Institute of Distance and Continuing Education (IDCE) would showcase the available areas of study, including the new programmes that would be offered in the new academic year, and other relevant information. Persons are encouraged to visit and see the work of individual faculty departments. Special invitations have been sent to secondary schools (public & private) throughout the country, with permission from the Ministry of Education, inviting them to the event. The general public, especially parents and guardians are also encouraged to visit the University during Open/Career Day and raise any questions and concerns they may have. Meanwhile, the University has invited a number of private and public sector agencies to set up booths to highlight their requirements for employment and career opportunities in their organisations. To date, 24 entities have confirmed their participation.

With a current enrollment of some 8,000 students, The University of Guyana (UG) has graduated more than 20,000 students who have gone on to successful careers locally, regionally and internationally. The University is also a major contributor to the national economy and to business and industry. Established in 1963 on a part-time basis with shared space at Queens College, UG moved to its own campus at Turkeyen in 1970 and expanded in 2000 with the addition of the Tain Campus.
