Two commemorative coins to be available by year-end

Georgetown : Minister of Culture Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony handed over $250, 000 each to Adrian Juman and Courtney Douglas who are the winners respectively of the coin designs to depict the 250-year anniversary of the Berbice Slave rebellion and 175- year anniversary since the first indentured immigrants arrived in Guyana.

Last year, the ministry started a process in terms of highlighting these two anniversaries. February this year would mark the 250 years of the Berbice Slave rebellion and May, 175 years since the first East Indian indentured immigrants landed here.

Minister Anthony mentioned that the ministry believes that these events are very significant because they allow persons to be more aware of Guyana’s history.  “While other activities will be held to highlight these events we felt that one way in which we can immortalise the date is to have two coins specially designed,” Minister Anthony said.

The ministry will be supplying the Bank of Guyana with the designs and these will be put it into a commemorative coin each and will be released by year- end.

The Berbice Slave rebellion was the first major revolution in the territory in British Guiana which occurred on February 23, 1763.

On May 5 anually, activities are planned and executed in remembrance of the East Indian immigrants who came in 1838 to work on the sugar plantation.
