Two Caribbean Airlines board members dismissed

Port-of-Spain: Two members of the controversial Caribbean Airlines board have been dismissed. Board members Susan Smith and Allan Clovis have had their appointments revoked.

The move comes months after mounting calls for the board to be dissolved following numerous personality clashes among members and even with then line minister Jack Warner.

The appointment of Smith was revoked to make way for a Jamaican to serve as a member of the board, now that the airline has merged with Air Jamaica.

The other board member, Tobagonian Allan Clovis was fired by the Cabinet for alleged personality issues. Clovis has been one of the most outspoken members of the Caribbean Airlines board.

He had previously raised concerns about how the airline was being run under Chairman George Nicholas he had also supported calls by former Transport Minister Jack Warner for the entire board to be dissolved.

Efforts to contact officials at Caribbean Airlines were unsuccessful. However Works Minister Warner confirmed the dismissals on Tuesday.

New Transport Minister Devant Maharaj appeared to be in the dark about the developments related to the national airline, saying he was unaware of the dismissals which took effect within the last few days.

He says that he spoke with the CAL chairman, who now falls under his purview and was at no time informed of the dismissals.

Since its inception the CAL board has been the subject of controversy with clashes among board members, chairman Nicholas and even between the chairman and then Minister Warner.
