T&T man who staged own kidnapping swindled family in 2001

Police apprehended Sawak Maraj during his plot to fake his own kidnapping

Georgetown: The Chemical Engineer of Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) who staged his own kidnapping in Guyana recently is expected to be charged with his accomplices as investigators discovered that the 33 year old man did the same thing in 2001 in his homeland resulting in his family paying over TT$200,000 for his safe return in 2001, police confirmed.

Maraj, a Chemical Engineer, of lot 131 Sandyways Fairways Marabal came to Guyana on a Caribbean Airline Flight recently and was scheduled to be accommodated at Ramada Hotel, Providence East Bank Demerara, but never arrived at the hotel.

After contact was made with the man’s family in T&T, they reported the matter to the Guyana Police Force and the Major Crimes Unit went into action locating Maraj at a resort on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway in a relaxed position on Friday.

When apprehended Maraj story was not adding up and police later discovered the plot through questioning him and his two accomplices. 

According to the Guyana Police Force, on Friday morning, the parents of the Trinidadian national were contacted in twin-island republic via cellphone by an unknown person who indicated that their son was in custody in Guyana and a sum of money was later demanded for his release.

He purportedly arrived in view of attending an interview for potential employment, the police said.

The police stated that diligent investigations led investigators to the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, where after several searches in different areas,  Maraj was found at Madewini Resort.  Investigations are in progress.
