Trio remanded for attempted hijacking of moonlighting policeman’s taxi

Three men have been remanded to prison after police in New Amsterdam identified them as the men who attempted to hijack a taxi car driven by a moonlighting off-duty policeman last week.
It is alleged that Shawn Wood, 36, of Limliar Village, Corentyne, and Andrew Davis, 24, of Victoria Village, East Coast Demerara on Thursday, May 3, at Palmyra Village attempted to rob Prem Narine of one motor car valued $2 million. Martin D’Andrade, 34, was also charged for aiding and abetting Wood and Davis.
The men were also charged for robbing the policeman, who is attached to the CID headquarters, of a 9mm pistol along with eight live matching rounds. The preliminary inquiry will begin on May 21.
Narine was working for a taxi service owned by a relative and had picked up two of the accused somewhere in Kitty to take them to East Berbice and back for about $14,000.  As Narine crossed the Berbice Bridge, the men attacked him, with one placing a knife to his neck forcing him to stop the car. The other man, who had sat in the front passenger seat, exited the car, intending to take the driver’s seat.
However, as the man was making his way around the car, Narine drove the car into the nearby trench. As a scuffle ensued, Narine whipped out his weapon and began firing at the man in the car. The attacker eventually wrestled the gun from Narine and fled the scene.
The same night, the police apprehended one of the men, while the other who sought refuge in the Crab Island mangrove was arrested the next day when he emerged from his hiding place. The damaged car is still parked at the Central Police Station, and no one was seriously injured during the incident. The police recovered the firearm.
