Daniel Ali, a 29- year-old was unrepresented. According to the prosecution’s case, it is alleged that between January 3 to February 19, 2017 at Georgetown, he conspired to forge a driver’s license. The prosecution also stated that on March 23, 2017 he made a false statement purporting to be Selall Madia to immigration officials. Ali went to the Immigration office at Georgetown to apply for a Guyana Passport and it was discovered that he had overstayed his time in Guyana. A contact with Interpol was established and information emanating from that agency revealed that Mr. Ali is wanted by that organisation for Fraud and Larceny.
Ali told the court that he secured a ticket to return to Trinidad and that he lost track of time. He pleaded guilty.
The Prosecution also stated that on the same day in question, the defendant presented a driver’s license to Immigration authority in the name Selall Madia; upon checking the records with the Guyana Revenue Authority, it was revealed that his correct name was David Ali and not Selall Madia and that he arrived at the CJIA under David Ali.
In his defence, Mr. Ali told the court that he lost his passport and that he did not know what to do and as a result he paid the sum of $200,000 to one “Ryan” in order to obtain the document.
Mr. Ali was fined $30,000 or an alternative of eight weeks in prison for the offence of overstaying; he was also given one year for the offence of forged passport and one year for forged driver’s license. His sentences will run concurrently.
