Transgender sex worker killed in Vreed-en-hoop crash

Dead: Donikel Campbelle

Georgetown: A transgender sex worker was killed after being struck down by a car Sunday morning at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara.

Dead is Donikel Campbelle, 27, a security guard of Lot 23 Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara.

However, the deceased’s family thinks that Campbelle was deliberately struck down because of his sexual orientation.

According to the police, Campbelle was fatally hit by motorcar PRR 5279 which was at the time being driven by a 40-year-old resident of Company Path, Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

According to information, the car was proceeding west along the southern carriageway of Vreed-en-Hoop public road when Campbelle allegedly ran across the road from north to south and was struck by the vehicle.

Campbelle sustained injuries to his head and body. He was picked up by public spirited persons and rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) in a conscious state. He died while receiving treatment at the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation. A breathalyzer test performed on the driver showed no evidence of alcohol.

A post-mortem will be conducted on Campbelle’s remains Monday.

Campbelle’s sister said that she was at home when a friend called to say that her brother was involved in an accident.

“My brother is a jovial person and he normally gets along with everybody,” she said.

She added that when she got to the scene she saw her brother lying on the ground with what appeared to be a chop wound behind his neck.
