Tourism awareness month kicks off with award ceremony

Dominica’s tourism awareness month is being kicked off on the last day of April with the 2012 Tourism Industry Awards ceremony.

According to the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA), awards will be presented in several categories this year, including Tourism Vendor of the Year, Tourism Taxi Driver of the Year, Tour Guide of the Year, and Industry Employee of the Year.

There are also awards for Accommodation of the Year, Responsible Tourism, and Community Tourism Development.

The authority says one family which has for years been in the forefront of promoting Dominica tourism, the Armour Family, will be honored for its pioneering and ongoing efforts at marketing Dominica as an active, health-conscious, eco-tourism destination for over forty (40) years.

Media personnel are not being left out this year.

The DDA says tourism related features will be recognized, focusing on individuals who participated in a three (3) day media training workshop conducted by the DDA in collaboration with the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

Some nine major activities are being held during Tourism Awareness Month, including a Secondary School Tourism Youth Congress (May 3), a Hike Fest (May 5, 19 & 26), and Courtesy Week from May 8-11.

The Discover Dominica Authority says the objective of the month-long celebration is to increase public awareness of the Tourism Industry’s economic, cultural, and social contributions to our Nature Isle, Dominica.
