Georgetown: The Guyana Tourism Authority facilitated a Customer Service training session for Captains and Bowmen of the Demerara River Speed Boat Association recently. The session was held at West Demerara Secondary School and conducted by Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority, Mr. Indranauth Haralsingh.  The duration was 3 hours with a total of 40 persons in attendance.

It was a very interactive session as scenarios were given of incidents and questions asked of ways to deal with such situations.  Other areas that were discussed during the session were Effective Communication Techniques, Characteristics of Good Service, Safety, Role in Delivering Good Customer service and Customers Expectations. The Director commended the Boat Operators for a job well done and emphasized the need to continue exhibiting good customer service on a daily basis. He also commended them for having a good safety record while plying the Vreed-en-Hoop/Stabroek route.

After the training, a quiz was administered where the group was given the opportunity to answer questions and win prizes which included tours around the country. The Authority also distributed Explore Guyana Magazines to Captains and Bowmen.

Customer Service Training has been an ongoing exercise which has been offered by the Tourism Authority for a few years and has been recommended for Boat Operators of the Demerara River Speed Boat Association by the Maritime Administrative Department.

Over 8000 persons commute via water taxis (speedboats) daily between Vreed-en-Hoop to Stabroek.

It is the mandate of the Guyana Tourism Authority to conduct training for service providers who interface with the members of the public on a daily basis to ensure that they are knowledgeable and aware of what Good Customer Service entails which would aid in the delivery of quality service.

The Authority will be conducting Customer Service Training in Bartica on September 30th and Conversational Dutch Language Training for Customs & Immigration and other relevant Officers at the Canawaima Ferry Crossing in the first week of October. Other training programmes to be conducted for the remainder of the year include City Tour Guide Training, Customer Service Training for Hotels in Georgetown and Linden and Culinary Training for Restaurants.
