Tobago PNM slams Prime Minister for statements at airport renaming ceremony

Tobago: The Tobago Council of the People’s National Movement is condemning what is says was disrespect by Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar of former president, Arthur N. R. Robinson and the people of Tobago, at the renaming of the ANR Robinson International Airport at the airport’s departure lounge on Thursday.

A statement from the party says that at a function where the theme and the tone were about unity and collaboration in paying tribute to one of the island’s and the country’s most esteemed sons, the prime minister debased the occasion by engaging in blatant political campaigning and vitriolic attacks on the previous regime.

It says many members of the audience were visibly embarrassed during the prime minister’s presentation as she shifted the focus from the Tobago icon who was the honoree, so that she could satisfy what they see as her narrow personal and political agenda.

In doing that, the statement says, she transformed what should have been a memorable celebration into another partisan, political event which left a sour taste in the mouths of right thinking Tobagonians regardless of their political persuasion.

The PNM's Tobago Council says the prime minister owes an apology to the former president and the people of Tobago and this country for demeaning the historic occasion in what it argues was an an offensive and totally unacceptable manner.
