Tobago authorities to remove illegal tenants from capital

Tobago: The Tobago House of Assembly (THA) is sounding a warning to tenants occupying illegal structures in the capital Scarborough that the THA is about to break them down.

THA Chief Administrator Dr Ellis Burris is describing Scarborough as a urinal and shanty town and says the THA is moving to change that.

“Generally I would say sometimes Scarborough is like a urinal, people go and they urinate everywhere. You passing and you have a problem. You park behind FCB you have a problem, you park behind the Scarborough Mall you have a problem. You coming down from the top of Castries Street and the taxi stand we just built there people can be seen urinating behind it,” he said.

He said loans will be offered to businesses that may not have enough funds to enhance their structure adding that the structures in front of the First Citizens Bank will be removed along with other illegal structures throughout Scarborough.

Burris says tenants of those sturtcures are being put on red alert and that owners of the illegal structures should take steps to put them in order.

He says that the Public Health Department has been asked to identify sites in Scarborough where toilets can be erected to ensure the sanitary condition of the town was uplifted.

Dr Burris adds that the assembly is also embarking on building and improving streets to ensure there was a smooth flow of traffic between Northside Road and the centre of scarborough, improving bay street and joining it with Gardenside Street.
