Three schools receive steel pans

Georgetown:  As part of the Government's plan of revitalizing music instruction in schools, three Secondary School were each presented with a nine (9) piece steel band Wednesday. These schools include the Bladen Hall and Diamond Secondary Schools, Region 4, and Stewartville Secondary, Region 3.

The Lodge and Dolphin Secondary Schools also received instruments to boost their respective bands.

This presentation was at the Allied Arts Unit in the presence of students, teachers and PTA representatives of the respective schools and officials of the Ministry of Education.
At the simple but crucial presentation ceremony, the Schools' representatives were informed by the ACEO – Secondary, Ms. Charles of the Government's policy with regards to music, games, drama and sports in schools. She disclosed that the Education Ministry will soon be issuing a circular in that regard.

Ms. Charles emphasized that these initiatives are a part of the Ministry's focus of ensuring that all students experience a wholesome education.

Meanwhile, Administrator of the Music School, Mr. Tyndal indicated that the existence of the bands in schools allows for increased access and participation by more students.
He informed the gathering that through the School of Music training will be offered to the students via the Republic Bank Pan Minors Programme. He added that the pans should be stored in a secure place.

To date, over 20 schools have received steel pans. These include the West Demerara Secondary, Buxton Secondary, President's College, Mahaicony Secondary, Belladrum Secondary, Tutorial Academy, Tagore Memorial, Berbice High, Bartica Secondary, St. Ignatius Secondary, Wismar/Christianburg, Lodge Secondary, North Ruimveldt Secondary, the Bishop's High, St. Roses, Queens College, Dolphin Secondary, Christ Church/Pan Wave, St. Joseph High and North Georgetown Primary Schools.
Later this year an additional three schools will receive their bands. These are Anna Regina Secondary, St. Mary's High and McKenzie Secondary.
