Tewarie replaces dismissed Minister

Port-of-Spain: Former Principal of the St Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies, Dr Bhoendradath Tewarie has been appointed Minister of Planning, Social and Economic Restructuring and Gender Affairs, to replaced the dismissed Senator Mary King. Dr Tewarie will also be sworn-in as a Government Senator next Tuesday when the Senate meets.

Dr Tewarie was sworn in by President George Maxwell Richards in the presence of his parents, son and daughter-in-law, as well as Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

He told reporters that he accepted the portfolio with a heavy heart, because he was a close friend of the dismised minister. His first priority would be to align all government agencies with the developmental goals of the Government.

Tewarie served as a Minister of Planning and Development under the NAR government between 1986 and 1991 and was also the Executive Director of the UWI Institute of Business before moving on to become UWI principal. He also served as a director on the board of the failed CL Financial. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says she is confident that Tewarie would serve well in his new portfolio and has thanked the former minister for her service to the country.
