Telecoms sector liberalisation critical to national agenda- Teixeira

Georgetown : Engagements between Government and the two major players of the telecommunications sector, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) Company and Digicel continue as all parties work to find consensus that will chart the way forward.

Presidential Advisor on Governance, Gail Teixeira said that the telecommunications sector and its liberalisation and de-monopolisation is a critical component of the national agenda of Guyana.

“We are looking at opening up the sector fully… we are talking about liberalising the sector to allow for any other company that wishes to enter into the Guyanese market to come onboard,” Teixeira said.

Discussions were held with GT&T on December 10 and another meeting has been planned for early January. Digicel has made their written submission with regards to the provision of the Telecommunications Bill, which Government will be studying.
