Teens placed on $250,000 bail each for armed robbery

Berbice. Two teens have been placed on $250,000 each for allegedly robbing a Berbice family at gunpoint last week.The men were allegedly among a gang of four. Ray Anthony Lester, 19, of Lot 63 Hampshire, Corentyne, Berbice and Avinesh Dowananan, 19, of 35 Belvedere Squatting area were granted bail in the sum of $250,000 each by Magistrate Fabayo Azore when they appeared at the Albion Magistrate’s Court on five counts each of robbery under arms.  They were granted $50,000 bail on each of the charges.

The court was told that on Thursday, June 14, the men, while in the  company of others and armed with guns and knives, robbed Doodranie Mohan and four others at their home at Lot 8 Doctor Bush, Albion, Corentyne.
According to Prosecutor Roberto Figueira, on the day in question four masked armed men had invaded the property occupied by Mohan, her son Alvin Jagroo, 20; her nephew Mahesh Prashad, 27; and Michael Ramnarine, 21.  The victims were beaten by the bandits, but managed to escape with minor injuries.

The men allegedly robbed Mohan of $100,000 and gold jewellery valued at $175,000. Ramnarine was alleged robbed of a Brazilian gold chain valued at $30,000. Jagroo was allegedly robbed of a Nokia cellphone, a wristwatch, and silver rings, a total value of $55,500. Prashad was allegedly robbed of a silver ring valued $7000, while Davendra Ramotar was allegedly robbed of one Brazilian gold chain valued at $20,000. A holster for a knife, a .38 cylinder and a CD/DVD player were found not too far from the victims’ residence after the bandits fled.

The prosecution opposed bail on the grounds of the nature of the crime. Prosecutor Figueira told the court that both men were positively identified by the victims. The police are still looking for the other two men who they believe can provide additional information on the five robberies.  The men are expected to return to court on July 22.
