Teachers will be the best paid Public Servants – APNU

Georgetown : Executive member of the Guyana Teachers Union- GTU led by President Mark Lyte met today with a representatives of A Partnership for National Unity ( APNU). The meeting was held at the office of the Leader of the Opposition. Leader of the Opposition Brigadier David Granger congratulated GTU President Mark Lyte of his assumption to office and welcome members of the executive. Granger took the opportunity to iterate APNU’s commitment to the improvement of the education sector and making Guyana ‘an education nation’. Granger said that in an APNU administration, not only would every teacher be given a lap-top (computer), but teachers would be the best paid public servants in the country.

The GTU team briefed representatives of APNU on the state of education in Guyana and the several challenges facing the nation teachers. In what can be describes as an amicable engagement the two sides discussed a wide range of issues of importance to the education sector, these included; the need for improved facilities, salaries and concessions, better training for teachers, the need for school busses and boats, and the need for more vocational and technical education capacity.

The GTU team included President Mark Lyte, Immediate Past President, Mr. Colin Bynoe, Vice- President, Ms. Lesmeine Collins, General Secretary, Ms. Coretta Mc Donald, Deputy General Secretary, Ms. Jacquelyn Douglas, Regional Vice- President Donnette D’Andrade, and Executive Member Mr. Lance Baptiste.

APNU was represented by Leader of the Opposition Brigadier David Granger and included, Deputy Chairman of the APNU Dr. Rupert Roopnarine, Shadow Minister Legal Affairs, Mr. Basil Williams, Shadow Minister Education, Ms. Amna Ally and Communications Director, Mr. Mark Archer.APNU meets GTU
