Georgetown : Shortly after her appointment, Switzerland’s newly appointed Ambassador, Sabine Ulmann Shaban paid a courtesy call to the Hon. Norman Whittaker, Minister of Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development (MLGRD).
This visit enlightened the Ambassador about the mandate and functionality of the Ministry such as the implementation of its annual Subvention Grant release to the 71 Local Authority Bodies in Guyana which helps in the creation of new employment for residents through the contractors executing the Councils’ work programmes. The Honorable Whittaker further alluded to the difficulties experienced by a number of Councils in garnering outstanding rates and taxes.
The discussion between the two also included the key projects the Ministry has been implementing such as the G$1B National Clean-Up Programme which aims to improve the aesthetics and sanitation of Guyana and to strengthen the capacity of the Municipalities.
As a token of appreciation, Hon. Whittaker presented a copy of the Laws of Guyana, Chapter 28:02 along with a wooden sculpture of the map of Guyana to Ambassador Shaban.
