Dominica : Just under a quarter of a sample of 3,500 Caribbean men who have sex with men (MSM) also had sex with women a UNAIDS survey has revealed.
The survey, which covered 33 countries and territories in the Caribbean, has been following MSM for the past six months through an internet survey to better understand behavior among them.
20 men from Dominica participated in the survey.
Preliminary results of the survey was made public in Washington DC recently.
The survey revealed that just under a quarter of the 3,500 men who participated had sex with women but 15 percent didn’t consider themselves gay, bi or homosexual.
The survey revealed the following:
-25 percent of respondents never had contact with a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community organization
-28 percent had gone to a gay-friendly social space like a club or café
-85 percent connected with other MSM online
It also revealed that many Caribbean MSM live their lives in relative secrecy with just over half of all respondents indicating that either few people or nobody knows that they are attracted to other men.
Officially known as Caribbean Men’s Internet Survey (CARIMIS) the exercise has received part funding from United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Organizers say men who responded to CARIMIS embody the diversity of the Caribbean. They say men from very single religion participated — from Baptist to Baha’i, Catholic to Church of God. So too was every race, they say.
Final results will be released at a later date.
