Superintendent of Prisons to appear in Court

Bridgetown.

Superintendent of Prisons Lieutenant Colonel John Nurse  will appear in the Number 5 Supreme Court today, to explain why prisoners have continued to arrival late for hearings in the courts.

The late  arrival of prisoners to court  raised the ire of the Director of Public Prosecutions Charles Leacoc, QC, after  two accused both on remand arrived at the court around 10 a.m one hour later than the 9 o'clock start.

At the end of the day’s sitting,  Leacock,  said that he was at court from 8:45 a.m. but was forced to wait until 10 for a start.

“This can’t be happening,we’re wasting too much time. I am  asking the Superintendent [of Prisons] to come to court to explain why the men are having this systematic problem,” Leacock said.

He asked for a summons to be sent to the Superintendent of Prisons which was refused by  Justice Maureen Crane-Scott who  said she would use that option as a last resort.

Justice Crane-Scott  added that it was “past time” that an explanation be offered for the continued late arrival of prisoners.
