Sugar target on course

Bridgetown.

Barbados is on course to reach its sugar target of 18 thousand tonnes this year. Last weekend Andrew's factory in St Joseph completed its boiling process.

According to sugar officials  Andrews  produced 8,435 tonnes of sugar while Portvale, which is still grinding canes, has produced 8,483 tonnes of sugar this year.

Portvale is expected to complete grinding and the boiling off process by June 9th and officials believe that the 11 hundred tonnes of sugar needed to meet the target of 18 thousand tonnes will be met.

This year's sugar crop started on Wednesday March 6th and Barbados will be making only one shipment to the European Union in June to fulfill its quota requirements with that body.

Last year's harvest produced just over 24 thousand tonnes of sugar.
