Students call for more interships at QEH

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital's (QEH) internship selection committee says it has made recommendations to fill 30 available positions but the hospital says it has not yet moved to fill those posts.

The hospital was responding to a group calling itself Concerned Cave Hill Medical Students who are alleging that several of them are awaiting placement to complete their training.

According to the  students several non Barbadians have been chosen ahead of them for the internships and they've called for the creation of more internship positions at the hospital.

In a statement the hospital explained that it has a very sound selection process in which preference will be given to top Barbadian applicants and Barbadians from the University of the West Indies. The statement said it received 41 applications for the posts, 37 of which are from Barbadian students.

The QEH added that there are currently 36 internship posts at the hospital and six of the positions are currently occupied by Barbadian doctors who started their internships in January and are expected to be finished in December this year,  and the remaining 30 vacancies will be filled by Barbadians when the internships begin on July first.
