Street protest by civil servants in St Lucia

Castries, St Lucia.

Civil servants marched on the streets yesterday  in support of their demands for a 9.5 per cent salary increase that the Government says it cannot meet even as the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) urged the Kenny Anthony to rethink its policy towards the striking employees.

The public workers have been off the jobs for nearly three weeks now in support of their union the Civil Service association (CSA) even as the government continues to insist it cannot go  beyond a four per cent wage hike and benefits which have already been accepted by other public sector unions representing nurses, police, firemen and teachers.

The decision by the other unions, which like the CSA, are all members of the Trade Union Federation (TUF) has lead to a split within the umbrella grouping with CSA president Mary Isaac questioning the “solidarity” shown by her colleague trade unionists.

The street protest had originally been scheduled to have taken place last Thursday, but the union was forced to change plans after they did not receive the necessary permission from the police.

Isaac told reporters she was pleased with the protest and that the members would be voting later on whether to return to work while the negotiations continue.thumbnail-2
