Stabbings, rape mar Carnival J’ouvert celebrations

Sangre Grande: Two men have been hospitalised in Sangre Grande, one nursing a gunshot wound, while the other is nursing a stab wound inflicted in seperate post and pre jouvert celebrations.

Police say that shortly after two this morning, one man was standing on Wallenville Road, making preperations to go and celebrate jouvert when a car with three men pulled up and opened fire.

The injured man was shot in his head and chest and is now warded at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex.

In the second case shortly after 8am another man was at jouvert celebrations when five men approached him and stabbed him about the body.

In Maraval, following jouvert celebrations in Paramin a woman entered a car to take her home but was instead taken to Moraldo Street, Maraval where she was gang raped.

Police also arrested a 27-year-old man with a nine milimeter firearm containing nine rounds of ammunition during the celebrations in Paramin.

In Tunapuna eight men were arrested for various offences including two who were caught stealing a car.

In Arima two were held with firearms during celebrations, while in Arouca six were held on various offences including wounding.

They will all appear before a magistrate on Ash Wednesday.
