Social Protection Ministry beefing -up capacity in outlying areas-Minister Lawrence

IMG_4173Georgetown : Minister of Social Protection, Volda Lawrence said that this year, the ministry will be improving on its human resources capacity, so that officers of the various departments can be spread-out countrywide.

Minister Lawrence said that the Ministry will be collaborating with regional authorities to ensure that child welfare, social, probation and labour officers are stationed in every region.

“We took the initiative to begin to seek wherever we can find and most time is to have collaboration with the regional authorities to ensure we have officers. Many of those officers is just a one person space and we are seeking to extend the space or find new space where we can have more officers,” Minister Lawrence explained.

She further noted that the Ministry plans to expand its office in Lethem, Region Nine, while the Mahdia, Region Eight office will also be re-established and officers placed at these locations.

“We want those offices to have Labour Officers and Child Protection Officers working there. We are also looking at Mahdia right now; we are looking at a building there so that we can re-establish and people that office…We are going region by region, but we want to ensure that where (there are) mining activities and activities which will attract social issues, that we are in the forefront and have our officers there,” she stressed.

The intention, the Minister said is to restore confidence in society, and assure citizens  that their matters will be heard and will be treated with the highest respect.
