Report white collar crime says DPP

Bridgetown.

Director of Public Prosecutions Charles Leacock, has accused  companies and other institutions in Barbados are hiding white collar crime in an attempt to protect the image of their businesses.

In an address to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Barbados (ICAB) at the Hilton Hotel last night, Leacock called on companies and other institutions to report white collar crime.

He charged,  the low level of police investigations and prosecutions by the his office were directly linked to the under reporting of white crimes by victims.

"In the corporate world, the biggest problem is the lack of reporting crime by victims. One researcher said  many times people do  not realize that they are being duped. In the case of a bank employee who skims off a dollar from every account each month. It looks innoucous but if a person take a dollar off 5000 accounts every week and that happens over a year or 3 years, the  amount is  a large sum  of money being lost by the bank ", Leacock said.

He stated that in his early day as a member of the Director of Public Office, banks seldom complained about  white collar crimes.

"The culture is changing and they realise it is in their interest to report crimes and have employees who are raiding dormant accounts or skimming accounts prosecuted," he added.
