Reigning mas maker goes for record fifth win

Port-of-Spain: Reigning mas maker Brian Mac Farlane says he is considering bowing out major competitions if he wins the Band of the Year Title this year for a record fifth time, as thousands of masqueraders are now parading through the streets of the capital city.

Mac Farlane shares a record with retired mas maker Wayne Bearkley of winning the band of the year title four year's straight.

He's hoping to eclipse that and stand alone out front with this year's portrayal of Humanity of Life. He says if he does win the title this year, he will consider bowing out of competitions and simply play mas on the streets.

Like traditional Monday mas, the real costumes did not come out and Mac Farlane said he is hoping to cross the Queen's Park Savannah stage early tomorrow and he promises to put on a big show.

Mac Farlane is one of many big bands to have already passed through downtown Port-of-Spain, among which were Ronnie and Caro, Skullduggery, Rosaline Gabriel, Wee International, Genesis, Legacy and D'Krewe, bringing with them some 15,000 masqueraders.

By 3.30 pm there were 12 bands at the Queen's Park Savannah waiting to cross the stage.
