Recent ethnic tension among some Guyanese are worrying signs.

Georgetown- Last evening an Afro-Guyanese male attempting to overtake on the east bank public road in the vicinity of the Princess Hotel ended up into oncoming traffic and was force to stop. What happened next was quite upsetting and dangerous. Visibly armed to the waist the man exited the car and started beating on the unsuspecting driver of indian descent. Many onlookers were surprised at his actions since he was clearly in the wrong and yet attacked his fellow driver.

A few days ago an Indo-Guyanese mechanic was driving a customer's car to the workshop when a motorcyclist of African descent slammed into the vehicle. When the mechanic tried to inquire why he was speeding and what is to be done, the rider accosted him and said as quoted "what the hell yuh gun do". The mechanic avoided any other confrontation with the irate man and left the scene.

Just over a week ago, an Indian woman was jailed for one year for reportedly stealing a cell phone belonging to an Afro male. the incident happened in a casino. Reports are that the woman mistakenly took the phone for hers since he had a similar one.However, after it was discovered stolen the man eventually got back the phone intact, yet he pressed charges against the woman who has two young children to take care of. She appeared in court and was sentenced to one year in jail. These incidents among many others continue to instill fear among the Indian population.
