Re-election of WCO’s Secretary General receives Guyana support

Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, Secretary General, World Customs Organization (WCO).

Georgetown: Minister of State Joseph Harmon, during his weekly post-Cabinet briefing recently announced that the Government of Guyana will support the re-election of Dr. Kunio Mikuriya as Secretary-General of the World Customs Organisation (WCO).

Minister Harmon explained that Dr. Mikuriya held this post since 2009, and has accomplished tangible results for the WCO and its members. If elected at the council’s session in June 2018, this will be Dr. Mikuriya’s third and final term in office as the Secretary-General.

Minister Harmon disclosed that the Foreign Affairs Minister, Carl Greenidge was advised to convey Cabinet’s decision to the Government of Japan.

The WCO, with over 180 members, is an international organisation aiming to harmonise and unify customs procedures and to promote international cooperation. The WCO, as the only intergovernmental organisation on Customs matters, has been making a significant contribution to the development of global trade and economy through ensuring security and facilitation in international trade and promoting Customs cooperation.
