Georgetown: Head of State, Donald Ramotar, is looking to have the current 23rd Intercessional Meeting of CARICOM Heads in Suriname yield practical programmes and policies that will improve and accelerate the integration process and not merely be another talk shop. Ramotar was at the time speaking with local media operatives following the opening session of the CARICOM meeting.
This is the first such conference for Ramotar in his capacity as Head of State. He leads a Guyana delegation that includes Minister of Culture Youth and Sports, Dr. Frank Anthony, cricketing great, Clive Lloyd, Ambassador Elizabeth Harper and Ministers Clement Rohee and Carolyn Rodrigues, among others.
Ramotar told the Guyanese media that he is also keen on the issue of restructuring and improving the efficiency of CARICOM. It was at this juncture that he expressed his desire to see practical programmes and policies emanate from the Suriname meeting.
He said too that cricket will also be high on his agenda saying that it is a sport that has unified the Region in the past hence the inclusion of Lloyd in the delegation. “Cricket is very important for the people of the Caribbean…It is more than a sport,” said Ramotar as he underscored the pastime as one that has cemented the unity of CARICOM.
