PSC Meets with Canadian High Commissioner

Georgetown: The Private Sector Commission (PSC) met with the Canadian High Commissioner, Pierre Giroux, to engage in discussions on a number of critical areas, which are of concern to the Private Sector.

A number of issues were raised about Governance, GECOM, the State Assets Recovery Bill, Canadian Trade & Investments in Guyana and Guyana’s relations with Canada. The PSC stressed the importance and the need for free and fair elections, which they believe can certainly be achieved through assistance from Canada and the other ABC countries.

As it relates to trade and investment, it was noted that Canada is Guyana’s largest export destination; US$441.7 million or 30.7% of Guyana’s total exports of which 94% is gold as at December, 2016. Further, the assertion was made that Guyana has become a very attractive place for investment, especially since the offshore discovery of Oil & Gas. The idea of possible ‘joint-ventures’ between Guyanese companies and Canadian companies was entertained as technical and technological assistance is needed in order to maximize on the new Oil & Gas Sector and its lucrative onshore activities.

The Government’s Green Economy initiative was discussed along with possible cooperation between Canada and Guyana to attain the Sustainable Development Goals.
