President urges Mandir to play bigger role in addressing social ills

Georgetown : The issues faced in several communities such as gender based  violence, suicides and  others can be better addressed with input from religious organisations said President Donald Ramotar.

Speaking to a gathering at the Blairmont Mandir on Saturday, the president said the temple should also be seen as a place where persons can come for support, education and fight the scourges such as domestic violence.

Another issue that is painful, the president said, is that of suicide. “I don’t know if any of us can understand the depth of depression that occupies someone that makes them commit such a terrible act”. He called for a change in attitude to issues such as mental health which is often stigmatised. “This is where we can work together to make lives better,” he urged.

Noting that election was close, President Ramotar said that government has, and will continue to work with stakeholders to develop their communities.

“We know that when you advance your community, you are making a big contribution to the advancement of our country, as a whole”.

The work of the Mandirs, he added has not gone unnoticed, and government will continue to partner with them to fulfill what religion teaches, which is to serve mankind. “When you serve mankind, when you serve the poor then you know that you are serving God, as well…" It gives one’s life meaning and purpose when one can help others, he added.
