President of the Senate steps down

Bridgetown.

Veteran poltician Sir  Branford Taitt has resigned from the post of President of the Senate due to illness.

Sir Branford resignation from the Senate brings an end to a poltical career which began in 1971, when he was  appointed a senator and  Minister of Trade by then Prime Minister Errol Barrow.

In 1976 he was elected to the House of Assembly as the Member of Parliament for the urban constituency of St Michael West until he was defeated in 1999.

A flamboyant politican, he formally retired from elective politics in 2004, Sir Branford was appointed to the Senate after the Democratic Labour Party was returned to office in 2008.

Sir Branford 73, was Barbados first Consul General in NewYork prior to being a Minister of Government, he was knighted in 2010.

A new President is expected to be appointed by March 19.  According to Chapter 5 of the Constitution, whenever the office of President of the Senate becomes vacant for any other reason than a dissolution of Parliament , another senator has to be elected to fill the post not later than its second sitting after the vacancy has arisen.

Deputy President Kery Ann Ifill is currently the acting President of the Senate..
