President meets Mohammed on racial remarks

Port-of-Spain: President George Maxwell Richards will meet with the chairman of the Police Service Commission, Nizam Mohammed at 2.30 this afternoon, to discuss racial statements he made one week ago while addressing a parliament Joint Select Committee on the racial composition of the top brass of the police service.

Mohammed had told the meeting that there were too many police executives of African descent and that he would use his authority to go about changing that. His remarks have created public outcry and has been condemned by the Government, the Opposition, trade unions and the police top brass.

The President met with both Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley on Tuesday. The authority to dismiss Mohammed lies solely in the hands of the president. Mohammed has said he would not resign.
