President Granger meets with Commonwealth Secretary General

Commonwealth Secretary GeneralGeorgetown: President David Granger on Friday met with the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Baroness Patricia Scotland. The meeting took place at the United Nations Headquarters where both the President and the Commonwealth Secretary General were attending the signing ceremony of the historic Paris Agreement.

President Granger took the opportunity to once again congratulate the Baroness on her appointment as the new Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations.  The President wished the Secretary General a successful tenure.

During the meeting with Baroness Scotland, the President spoke of the significance of her appointment, coming as she did from a small island developing state, since the Commonwealth itself is made up of mainly small states. He noted, also, the coincidence of their meeting on the margins of the signing of the Paris Agreement, which is a global response to climate change, a phenomenon that is of great concern to all countries of the world, but particularly to Small-Island Developing States (SIDS). SIDS are particularly prone to the threat of rising sea levels caused by climate change.

Mr. Deodat Maharaj, Deputy Secretary General of the Commonwealth and Mr. Ram Venuprasad, Deputy Head of the Office of the Secretary General accompanied the Baroness to the meeting.
