East Bank Demerara : President Donald Ramotar has stressed the need for more support from the Diaspora, in creating the infrastructure and quality of service that are critical to the expansion and advancement of the tourism industry in Guyana.
President Ramotar was at the time speaking at the opening of a new multi-million dollar family owned Park Vue Hotel at Farm, East Bank Demerara.
The President cut the ribbon to ceremonially open the 200- plus room establishment complete with a pool, lounge, and restaurant and gift shop, owned by Robin and Sheron Persaud, re-migrant Guyanese.
President Ramotar said that the side-effect of the Persauds’ investments is a boost in the country’s infrastructure that is providing accommodation to tourists. He noted that the investment which will also create jobs; a major contribution to the development of any society also has the potential to create workers with the right attitude, and services that go a long way with making tourism successful
The President said more Guyanese in the Diaspora should take a leaf out of the Persauds’ book and invest in Guyana, not only to have returns on their investment but to allow for this transfer of passing on of work ethics learned whilst overseas. “I have heard people say that Guyanese here would stay here and lime, and then go abroad and work very hard, and we hope that when they come back home they can inculcate this among their fellow workers so that we can have better work ethics within our society,” the President said. He pointed out that this would only result in increased efficiency, productivity in the economy, and noted that it is opportune for persons to get involved in the industry, as it is definitely one of the sectors set on becoming another ‘growth pole’ for the economy.
Acting Minister of Tourism, Irfaan Ali welcomed the investment outside of the city. The effort adds to the focus on developing the East Bank corridor.
