PPP says APNU stance on unemployment a mockery

PPPGeorgetown: The People’s Progressive Party (PP) said it has found the concerns by A Partnership of National Unity (APNU) Leader Mr. David Granger about youth unemployment in Guyana, incredulous but at the same time “we hope that this serves as a reality check, that would move APNU into first gear as it relates to its participation in national development and the creation of job opportunities for all Guyanese.”

The party further stated “We find the concern and statement by Mr. Granger perplexing as this is the very individual and his party by extension who only a few short weeks ago voted against crucial pieces of legislation in the National Assembly for the realization of the Amaila falls hydro project.”

Underscoring that the nation by now is well aware of the unfortunate chain of events their action triggered, thereby putting the project in jeopardy, the PPP noted that it is a common understanding globally that cheap and reliable energy is a cornerstone for the economic development of any nation.

“It fuels particularly the expansion of the manufacturing sector, attracts both foreign and local investments and as a result create numerous job opportunities in various fields and sectors for the skilled, semi-skilled or unskilled labor force. This is the vision which was behind the efforts to realize the Amaila falls hydro project.” The PPP further stated “Mr. Granger and his party cannot on one hand sabotage efforts which will lead to the creation of jobs for Guyanese, particularly youths and then at the same time gripe about youth unemployment being a ‘ticking time bomb.”

“We are also reminded of the fact that these are the individuals who were loud in praise of the many young skilled Guyanese who were employed in the construction of the Amaila falls access road during a visit by the APNU leadership to the worksite that was publicized by the media and then a few days later they voted against critical perquisites for the project which saw Sithe Global withdrawing from the venture, effectively putting the jobs of those very Guyanese youths at risk.”

This, the PPP further stated that in reality it is Mr. Granger who is sitting on a ‘time bomb’ as he is running out of excuses and every time he utters a word, the magnitude of his misinformation to his constituents is being revealed.

“Make no mistake about it; they know that the actions of the APNU leadership were against their best interest and that of the nation. That is the ticking time bomb Mr. Granger has to deal with and we shall continue to monitor his attempts at diffusing the rising resentment and anger at his and his party’s anti-nationalistic actions.”
