PPP commends rice farmers for dedication to industry

Georgetown : The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) today commended rice farmers across the country for returning the industry to respectability and profitability. According to the party’s statement, these efforts culminated in Guyana recording its highest figure in history when rice production surpassed 500,000 tons in 2013.

“This sustained development which have seen new factories, thousands of acres of new land being cultivated, sustenance of traditional markets and new markets (Venezuela) also the Haiti market requires 100,000 mt of rice, negotiation on ongoing. The government and Guyana Rice Development Board will be engaging Belize, Guatemala and Brazil in purchasing rice from Guyana. The Minister of Agriculture will be leaving shortly to Latin America to pursue markets in that region. We are hopeful that the situation in Venezuela becomes normal so export to that country can commence.”

Meanwhile Rice Farmers at Essequibo last week staged a protest because they were receiving low paddy price from millers and were not getting the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and the PPP Government.
