Pomeroon man freed of manslaughter charge

Criminal-JusticeA Pomeroon man who was implicate in the murder of Alexis Smith in 2010 at Warapana, Upper Pomeroon River was freed on the lesser count of manslaughter by Justice Nareshwar Harnanan on Tuesday last at Suddie High Court, Essequibo.

Charles was represented by counsel Ms. Bishop.

The accused, Alfred Nathaniel Charles also of Warapana was initially charged with murder; however, the charge was reduced to manslaughter by the Director of Public Prosecution.

Justice Harnanan ruled on the case presented to him on the testimonies of the witnesses. Police had alleged in July 2010 at Warapana, Arpiarco Upper Pomeroon both the accused Charles and the decease were imbibing in alcohol at a rum shop.

 After becoming intoxicated both men had left the shop and ventured towards their boats. It was reported Smith was not contented and he requested cigarette and more alcohol. Charles however decided to tow Smith's boat to his in an attempt to persuade him not to go back to the shop.

Smith however, still desperate to fulfill his craves strike Charles with a piece of wood, in retaliation Charles struck Smith back. Smith fell overboard and was recovered three days after at Apariko.
