Police warn Trinidad Cement protestors

Claxton Bay: Police are now positioned outside of Trinidad Cement Limited where striking workers have set up camp.

Police officers warned the vice-president of the Oilfields Workers Trade Union (OWTU) Carlton Gibson this morning that the union will not be allowed to interfere with workers who want to enter the compound to work.

Gibson told the police that while the striking workers have no intention of interfering with their colleagues it is their duty to advise workers who are entering the plant that they will be without representation if anything should happen to them on the plant during the strike.

This morning police officers escorted several clerical workers into the TCL Claxton Bay compound. Company officials say they remain open to dialogue in the hope that the strike which could cripple the construction sector would end.

The company has offered seven percent while the union is demandng 16 percent.

Conciliation talks broke down at the Ministry of Labour last Friday and on Monday the OWTU served strike notice with immediate effect.
