Police respond to SN article on “Police cover-up”

Georgetown : The Guyana Police Force today respond to an article published in the Stabroek News on Wednesday May 30, 2012, on page 17 captioned ‘Signs of police cover-up in death of Pomeroon man, says family’.

The Guyana Police Force state that an investigation into a report of Homicide committed on Nathan Samuel James, of Arapaiako-Kabakuburi Village, Upper Pomeroon River on May 10, 2012 is being investigated.

A man was arrested as s suspect and was later released based on evidence collected while he was in custody.

Referring to the case file in the article, the file was indeed not sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions. The police say however, contrary to the view of the reporter who obviously lacks understanding of the process involved, is not strange. Files are usually sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions when the police feel that there is sufficient evidence to prosecute someone and when the investigation is completed, neither obtains in this case. The investigation is in progress.

As it relates to the other reports contained in the article leveled against ranks of the Guyana Police Force about them consuming alcohol with the suspect and of taking money to have the pathologist conduct the post-mortem, are also being investigated.
