Police reports a reduction in fatal accidents and murders

Georgetown : The Guyana Police Force this afternoon released statistics that indicated the road fatalities and murders for 2012 so far compare to last year has reduced.

There has been a significant decrease of 65% in murders during January this year in comparison to the same period last year, 2011. A total of 17 murders were recorded for January 2011 in comparison to 6 murders for January 2012. Of the 6 murders, 2 were of the disorderly type, 1 domestic related, while the other 3 are so far unknown.

Robbery under arms has increased by 40% during January 2012, with 74 reports compared to 53 during January 2011. The statistics indicate an increase of 11% in the number of armed robberies involving the use of firearms, and a 113% increase in armed robberies where instruments other than firearms were used by the perpetrators.

In relation to traffic, there has been a 38% reduction in road fatalities for January this year in comparison to January last year, with 8 fatalities this year and 13 last year. January 2012 has also seen significant reductions in relation to the other categories of traffic accidents – serious, minor and damage.

So far pedal cyclists is the main category of road users affected, with 5 such persons having lost their lives on the roads during January this year. Speeding is once more a major contributing factor to fatal accidents.

The Force says at the end of January this year a total of 6, 720 cases were made against errant motorists. Of this total 1, 229 cases were for speeding.
