ST JOHN’S, Antigua: Two police constables have been charged with causing grievous bodily harm to a Hispanic man who suffered broken limbs, lacerations to his head and body in an alleged beating during a traffic stop.
The duo is expected to appear in St John’s Magistrates’ Court today over the June 16 incident.
The injured man, 37-year-old Manuel Sanchez Carmond, originally from the Dominican Republic, has also initiated legal action against the two officers.
A painter by trade, Carmond served as a police officer for seven years in his home country.
The incident is alleged to have occurred just before midnight while he was on his way to his Upper Fort Road home. Carmond claims he was tailgated by an unmarked vehicle, before being forced to pull over and then beaten by the car’s occupants.
Meantime, three police officers are expected to be charged shortly in separate offences including rape, serious indecency and wounding.
The lawmen have already been questioned, as well as their alleged victims, sources said.
