Police hopes video footage catches AK 47 gunman who killed cop

cleto1Georgetown: After the killing of of Police Corporal Romain Cleto, 25 just outside the Bank of Baroda on the Avenue of the Republic, Police are now depending on a number of surveillance cameras  located on businesses in the area.

The Guyana Police Force depending on owners of those businesses to assist with the probe by providing information that would be captured on the cameras.

Police have launched a massive manhunt for the gunman in a silver-coloured car who used a high powered AK-47 assault rifle to riddled the police and the Toyota 4×4 pick-up which he was using yesterday.

The Corporal was shot dead early Saturday evening after he approached a heavily tinted vehicle that was carrying an obscure license plate. However, after the car stopped at the traffic light and the police decided to approach the vehicle, the driver of the car exited with the AK 47 and began to fire at the police and their vehicle. The gunman then escaped in his car.

The vehicle  bore over 10 gunshot marks and two other policemen who were in the vehicle; Anil Raj Persaud, 28, of Claybrick Road, Number Two Canal was cut by flying glass, and Randy Haley, 20, of Mahaicony sustained gunshot injuries to his left hand after a gunman sprayed their patrol vehicle with bullets.

A section of Avenue of the Republic in Georgetown remained closed and cordoned off to traffic Sunday morning.
