Police arrest 17, seize gun, ammo in separate raids

Georgetown: A forty-one year old businessman of Helena # 1, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was Saturday afternoon arrested with an unlicensed .32 Pistol, and 50 matching round and seventeen, 9 MM live ammunition.

Police ranks acting on intelligence swoop down on the suspect's home about 22:55hrs and conducted a search, during which the illegal weapon and ammunition were found in his bedroom

Shortly after, the suspect forty year old wife went to the Mahaica Police Station where she offered a bribe of $525,000 to one of the investigating ranks to forego the charges against her husband. She has since been arrested and the money lodged. Both are being processed for court.

On Saturday several operations were carried out in 'C' Division which resulted in a total of 17 persons being arrested for various offences inclusive of a forty-nine year old for Trafficking in Narcotics. Four motorcycles suspected to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained were also seized.
Meanwhile, on Saturday a resident of Goedverwagting, ECD was arrested and taken into custody for unlawful possession of a firearm. Police acting on information went to the Stabroek Market in the vicinity of Digicel about 15:30hrs and conducted a search on the twenty-one year old construction worker and found an unlicensed .38 Revolver without ammunition on his person. He is being processed for court.
