PM urges good will while lighting up Christmas Tree at Rahaman’s Park

Georgetown: Prime Minister Samuel Hinds last night flicked the switch to illuminate the Christmas tree at Rahaman’s Park, Houston to usher in the festive season.

This private/public partnership event, the seventh of its kind attracted scores of children, who eagerly awaited the fireworks and Santa Claus. The Prime Minister in his address reminded the gathering of the reason behind the festive season.

“It is a tradition of not carrying grievances into the New Year…Government is pleased to be associated with this annual activity and the Ministry of Tourism sees this as an important event in the Tourism Calendar of activities,” he said.

The PM spoke of the many projects which the Ministry of Tourism has been embarking on with the aim of developing tourism, as the sector remains an important player in the economy.

Derrick Cummings who spoke on behalf of the Tourism Industry and Commerce Ministry,  encouraged Guyanese to work together to ensure that the country’s motto of ‘One People, One Nation, One Destiny’ is maintained.

“I also call on you all to use the festive season to give love and to ensure that you show fellow Guyanese the true meaning of Christmas,” he said.

A brief history behind the initiative was given by its founder, Ray Rahaman who pointed to the fact, that it is an opportunity for private/public partnership to be in full swing.
