PM referred to Intergrity Commission over award of $40M contract

Port-of-Spain: The Integrity Commission is being asked to investigate Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and her close relationship with the owners of Gopaul Company Limited, after the company won a $40 million bid from state owned National Petroleum for the supply of trailer trucks used in gasoline haulage.

Speaking at a news conference this afternoon, Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley said the Prime Minister’s free stay at the Gopaul’s Pasea Tunapuna home qualifies as a gift and under the Integrity in Public Life act poses a conflict of interest.

The prime minister has stayed at the property immediately after the May 24th, 2010 general election.

The prime minister has consistently said she knew nothing about the contract and that she have any involvement in it..

She told reporters this afternoon that she could not comment on the issue until first reading the documents that have been sent to the Integrity Commission.
