Pilot killed in Mahdia jungle plane crash

Aircraft 8R-GFM spotted, troops preparing to be inserted into the jungle to rescue the pilot who was the only person on board.
Georgetown: The pilot of an Air Services Limited (ASL) domestic carrier died Sunday in the jungles of Mahdia. He was identified as Captain Imran Khan.

Aviation authorities confirmed the death and noted that the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) rescue team was deployed.  The operation was dubbed “Operation Hawkeye” and the Search and Rescue Mission was launched to assist the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority in locating an Air Services Limited CESSNA 206 aircraft which has gone missing in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni).

It is reported that the aircraft, piloted by ASL's Captain Imran Khan, was en route from Chi Chi to Mahdia where it was expected to arrive at 08:47 hours. However, at 09:08 hours an Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) signal for the said aircraft, was identified as coming from an area west of Mahdia

Troops from the GDF 31 Special Forces Squadron are involved in the OPERATION. The GDF has also deployed a helicopter to support the SAR Mission.

The body will be taken out to Mahdia and flown to the city early Monday morning.

Investigators said the body was discovered on the ground as the aircraft dangled from the trees.

The Special Forces team arrived at the thickly vegetated and mountainous crash site on foot at about 6 PM Sunday.
