Opposition MPs sworn in

Bridgetown.

The  parliamentary members of the opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) were sworn in by Governor General Sir Elliot Belgrave during a ceremony at Government House yesterday.

Leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley was the first to be sworn in followed by former Opposition Leader and Member for St Peter Owen Arthur.

After the swearing ceremony Mottley told journalists the Government's austerity programme has failed to work.

"Barbados is at a very difficult time and I think that how we move forward is going to determine what kind of future our children will have. There is a lot less room for manoeuvability and the country is going to be very demanding of us on both sides, in terms of doing the right thing and putting this county first at all time", Mottley said.

She suggested that the Government's Medium Term Fiscal Srategy refers to proposed cuts this financial year which starts next month and in the following financial year.

The other Members of Parliament sworn in were George Payne, Gline Clarke, Ronald Toppin, Cynthia  Forde, Dale Marshall, Trevor Prescod, Kerrie Symmonds, Edmund Hinkson, Lt. Colonel Jeffrey Bostic, Dr Mari Agard, Dwight Sutherland and Santia Bradshaw.

The two Opposition Senators Dr Jerome Walcott and Wilfred Abrahams were also sworn in.
