Opposition leader welcomes sugar factories reopening

Georgetown: Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo is in support of the move to re-open the Enmore and Skeldon sugar factories.

Finance Minister, Winston Jordan on Thursday announced that the Enmore and Skeldon sugar factories will be reopened by the end of March.

He said the move is necessary to attract investments.

But while this decision has been welcomed by Jagdeo, he believes that the factories should not have been closed in the first place.

He told the media on Thursday that, “If they can reopen them that is fine with me, in fact, I will support the reopening of all the estates why stick with only these two why not reopen all the estates?”

Jagdeo is also calling on the government to admit that it made a wrong decision to close the factories.

“It treated the sugar industry in a political fashion when they should have done more technical work, we called on them to do the technical work they never did, they made the wrong decision,” Jagdeo said.
